M-Audio AIR 192x14 Desktop 8x4 USB Type-C Audio Interface

The M-Audio AIR 192x14, written AIR 192|14, is an 8 in, 4 out USB-C interface at 24 bit and 192 kHz, with four Crystal preamps, two instrument inputs, two line inputs and two independent headphone outputs. It weighs 1.8 kg.

Eight inputs, and which is which

Four XLR and 1/4 inch TRS mic and line combo inputs carry Crystal preamps with phantom power. Two 1/4 inch instrument inputs take guitars and basses directly, and two 1/4 inch line inputs take keyboards or outboard. All eight record at once.

That layout is what makes the 192x14 the one to buy for tracking a band or a full drum kit rather than one part at a time. The 192x6 and 192x8 record two channels.

Two headphone outputs that do different jobs

Both 1/4 inch headphone outputs have independent volume controls and source select switches. Independent source selection is the useful part: a performer and an engineer can listen to different mixes from the same interface, so a singer gets more of themselves without changing what the engineer hears.

A monitor mix control provides zero latency listening directly to the source inputs, and a USB and Direct knob balances input against computer signal. A large metal monitor volume knob sets the main level.

Connections and size

USB-C connects to the computer. MIDI in and out are on 1/8 inch (3.5 mm) connectors rather than full size DIN, so a MIDI adaptor cable is needed for a standard 5 pin instrument.

The interface measures 25.9 x 18.6 x 9.1 cm and weighs 1.8 kg. Software includes Ableton Live Lite, MPC Beats, Revalver, 80 AIR effect plugins, the Creative FX Collection Plus, Strike, Hybrid 3, Mini Grand, DB-33, Xpand!2, TubeSynth, Electric, Bassline and a Touch Loops sample pack.
