Why a 7200 RPM enterprise drive
Most external desktop drives use a 5400 RPM consumer mechanism, which is fine for backups and slow for working from. The d2 Professional spins at 7200 RPM on an enterprise class drive designed for continuous use, which is what makes it suitable for a live project drive: sample libraries, video footage and multitrack sessions read back without waiting.
Speed depends on the capacity
Larger drives are faster because more data passes under the head per revolution. LaCie quotes up to 240 MB/s for the 8 TB model and up to 290 MB/s for the 10 TB model on USB-C 3.2 Gen 2, which also works with USB 3.0, USB4, Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4 ports.
For a sample library or a streaming video project, choose the larger capacity for speed as well as space.
Desktop, not portable
The d2 Professional is a desktop unit that runs from its own power adapter rather than bus power, which is what lets it drive a 7200 RPM mechanism. For drives that travel, the LaCie Rugged range is built to survive drops and rain.
LaCie supplies the d2 Professional with a five year warranty and its Rescue data recovery service.
