KRK Classic 5" Near-Field 2-Way Studio Monitor

The KRK Classic 5 is a bi-amped 2-way nearfield monitor with a 5 inch glass aramid woofer and a 1 inch textile soft dome tweeter, 50 W in total, measuring 56 Hz to 30 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB and reaching 101 dB peak.

Flat by default, with the KRK bass available

The Classic series ships set to a flat response for mixing. The +2 dB KRK Bass Boost, the low end lift the brand is known for, is there as an option rather than baked in. That default is the right way round: a mix balanced on a hyped monitor tends to come out thin everywhere else.

Response, and how to read the two ranges

Within plus or minus 3 dB the Classic 5 covers 56 Hz to 30 kHz. KRK also quotes bass extension to 46 Hz and top end extension to 34.5 kHz; those are the outer limits where the output is falling away, not the range to judge a mix on.

A 30 W amplifier drives the woofer and a 20 W amplifier drives the tweeter, both Class A/B, crossing over at 2.6 kHz. Maximum level is 101 dB peak with the limiter.

Controls, inputs and placement

Low frequency trim offers -1 dB, flat, +1 dB and +2 dB below 200 Hz, and high frequency trim offers -2 dB, -1 dB, flat and +1 dB above 2.6 kHz, with system volume from -30 dB to +6 dB. Use the low trim to pull back bass when the monitor sits near a wall.

The port fires forward, so the monitor can go closer to a wall than a rear ported design. Inputs are RCA, balanced 1/4 inch TRS and balanced XLR. Each monitor measures 332 x 226 x 290 mm and weighs 5.87 kg. The Classic 8 is the same design with an 8 inch woofer, 100 W and 106 dB.
