KRK 8S2 8 inch Powered Subwoofer

The KRK 8S2 is a powered studio subwoofer with an 8 inch glass aramid woofer and a 109 W Class D amplifier, covering 35 Hz to 133 Hz at up to 112.8 dB, with switchable crossover points at 70, 80, 90 and 100 Hz.

The crossover switch is the useful part

A subwoofer added to a pair of monitors has to take over the low end at a point where the monitors are still working properly. The 8S2 lets you choose that point from four settings: 70, 80, 90 or 100 Hz. Pick the setting just above where your monitors start to roll off, and the two systems hand over cleanly instead of doubling up or leaving a gap.

A polarity switch sits alongside it. If the bass gets thinner rather than fuller when the sub is switched on, flipping the polarity is the first thing to try, because the sub and the monitors are cancelling each other at the crossover.

Connections

Inputs and outputs are on XLR, 6.3 mm jack and RCA, so the 8S2 sits between an interface and a pair of monitors with whatever cables are already in use. An input sensitivity control matches its level to the monitors.

A footswitch socket bypasses the subwoofer so a mix can be checked with and without the low end. The footswitch itself is not included. Standby and ground lift switches complete the rear panel; ground lift is the one to reach for if the sub introduces a hum.

Size and placement

The cabinet measures 362 x 339 x 294 mm and weighs 11.8 kg. Placement matters more for a subwoofer than for any other speaker, so expect to move it around the floor and listen, rather than setting it once under the desk.
