Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 USB Audio Interface (3rd Generation)

The Focusrite Scarlett 4i4 3rd Gen is a 4-in, 4-out USB-C interface with two 3rd generation microphone preamps at 56 dB gain, two fixed line inputs, four balanced outputs and MIDI in and out. It is bus powered from a 900 mA USB port.

Four outputs and MIDI

The step from the 2i2 to the 4i4 is not about microphone count, since both have two preamps. It is about what leaves the interface and what else connects to it. Four balanced outputs allow a second monitor pair or a send to outboard, and 5 pin MIDI in and out connect hardware synths and controllers without a separate MIDI interface.

Two fixed line inputs sit alongside the two variable channels, so a synth or a drum machine stays permanently connected while the preamps are used for microphones.

Measured performance

Microphone inputs measure 111 dB A-weighted dynamic range, variable line inputs 110.5 dB, fixed line inputs 110 dB, line outputs 108 dB and headphone outputs 104 dB. THD+N is below 0.0012 percent on microphone inputs and below 0.002 percent on line and monitor outputs.

Conversion supports 44.1, 48, 88.2, 96, 176.4 and 192 kHz at 24 bit.

Air and connection

Air mode reproduces the effect of Focusrite's ISA microphone preamps on the two variable channels. Connection is USB-C running USB 2.0, bus powered, requiring a 900 mA port, which is worth checking on older laptops and on unpowered hubs.

Bundled software includes Ableton Live Lite, Pro Tools Intro+, Cubase LE and the Hitmaker Expansion.
