Focusrite iTrack Solo Desktop 2x2 USB/Lightning Audio Interface

The Focusrite iTrack Solo is a 2x2 audio interface that connects to an iPad over Lightning as well as to a Mac or PC over USB, with a Scarlett range microphone preamp, 48 V phantom power and a Hi-Z instrument input.

Built for the iPad, not adapted to it

Most interfaces reach an iPad through a camera adapter and a powered hub. The iTrack Solo has a Lightning connection and is certified by Apple for it, so the connection is direct.

Focusrite lists compatibility with Lightning iPads including the iPad Pro, iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina Display, iPad 4th generation and later, and iPad Air, and with the common iOS recording apps such as GarageBand, Cubasis and Auria.

Inputs

One Focusrite microphone preamp from the Scarlett range on XLR, with 48 V phantom power for condenser microphones, and one 1/4 inch Hi-Z input for guitar or bass. Outputs are stereo, and the unit is USB bus powered.

Phantom power on an iOS interface is the specification that matters most here, because it is what allows a studio condenser to be used with a tablet at all.

Resolution and the alternative

With a desktop computer the iTrack Solo records at up to 24 bit and 96 kHz. That is lower than the 192 kHz of the current Scarlett 3rd generation range, and it is the trade for the iOS connection.

If iPad recording is not required, the Scarlett Solo 3rd Gen offers 192 kHz conversion, Air mode and better measured figures for similar money.
