Focal Sub6 Be Powered Studio Subwoofer

The Focal Sub6 is an active studio subwoofer with an 11 inch W membrane driver in a large rear laminar port cabinet, 350 W Class G amplification, covering 30 Hz to 250 Hz at 116 dB peak. It is 38 x 34.4 x 44 cm and weighs 23 kg.

The routing is the useful part

Inputs are Left, Right and LFE on symmetrical XLR at 10 kOhms, with Left and Right outputs provided. That means the Sub6 sits in the signal path between the interface and the main monitors rather than hanging off a spare output.

A stereo high pass crossover adjustable between 75 Hz and 100 Hz feeds the monitors, so they are relieved of the low end the subwoofer is now producing. That relief is what actually improves a system: the main monitors distort less because they are no longer trying to reproduce frequencies they cannot.

Alignment controls

A configurable low pass filter, mono summation, a phase inverter and an adjustable phase control are all fitted. Phase alignment between a subwoofer and the main monitors is the difference between a low end that adds and one that partially cancels at the crossover point, and it cannot be set correctly without those controls.

The driver is an 11 inch, 27 cm W composite sandwich cone in a large rear laminar port cabinet, driven by a 350 W Class G amplifier.

Range and size

Response is 30 Hz to 250 Hz at plus or minus 3 dB, with a peak SPL of 116 dB at 1 metre. The cabinet is 38 cm high, 34.4 cm wide and 44 cm deep, weighing 23 kg.

For a larger system, the Focal Sub12 uses a 13 inch driver with 600 W RMS and reaches 28 Hz at 124.5 dB.
