The Focal Sub12 is an active studio subwoofer with a 13 inch W-cone driver, 600 W RMS and 1000 W peak amplification, covering 28 Hz to 400 Hz at up to 124.5 dB SPL.

Twenty eight hertz, and what it is for

A subwoofer in a studio is not there to make the system louder. It is there so the bottom two octaves are audible while mixing, because decisions about kick weight, bass level and low end rumble cannot be made on information that is not being reproduced.

The Sub12 reaches 28 Hz with a 13 inch W-cone driver, which is Focal's composite sandwich construction. Maximum SPL is 124.5 dB and the useful range extends up to 400 Hz.

Amplification

600 W RMS with 1000 W peak. Those numbers are high because a subwoofer moves far more air than a monitor: producing 28 Hz at a usable level requires both cone area and power, and running short of either produces distortion rather than quiet.

Integration

A subwoofer has to be crossed over and time aligned with the main monitors or it will muddy the range it overlaps. Plan for a measurement pass after installation rather than setting the crossover by ear.

For a smaller system, the Focal Sub6 uses an 11 inch W membrane driver with a 350 W Class G amplifier, covering 30 Hz to 250 Hz at 116 dB.
