Description
The Focal Shape 65 is a 2-way active monitor with a 6.5 inch driver and a 1 inch M-profile aluminium magnesium inverted dome tweeter, 80 W to the woofer and 25 W to the tweeter, covering 40 Hz to 35 kHz at up to 109 dB SPL.
Designed for rooms that are not ideal
The Shape range uses passive radiators on the sides of the cabinet instead of a port. A ported monitor placed close to a wall produces a bass lift and port noise; a passive radiator design is far less sensitive to that placement.
For a project studio where the monitors have to sit near a wall because there is nowhere else for them, that design decision matters more than most specifications on the sheet.
The tweeter
The tweeter is a 1 inch M-profile inverted dome in aluminium and magnesium rather than the beryllium used in Focal's Twin6 and Trio6 ranges. It reaches 35 kHz. The inverted dome geometry is common to both: it improves the coupling between the voice coil and the dome and widens dispersion.
Amplification is 80 W to the woofer and 25 W to the tweeter, in Class AB.
Range and comparison
Frequency response is 40 Hz to 35 kHz at plus or minus 3 dB, with a maximum SPL of 109 dB.
The Shape Twin adds a second 5 inch driver in a 2.5-way arrangement with 2 x 80 W plus 50 W and reaches 110.5 dB. For beryllium tweeters and more output, the Twin6 range is the step up.
