Eve Audio SC205 Active 2-Way 5" Nearfield Studio Monitor

The EVE Audio SC205 is a 2-way active nearfield monitor with a 5 inch SilverCone woofer and an RS1 AMT tweeter, 100 W total, covering 53 Hz to 21 kHz at up to 101 dB SPL. The cabinet is 175 x 275 x 233 mm and weighs 5 kg.

Where the SC205 sits

Against the SC204, the woofer grows from 4 inch to 5 inch, bass extension improves from 64 Hz to 53 Hz, and maximum SPL rises from 96 dB to 101 dB. The RS1 AMT tweeter is the same on both, so the top end is unchanged.

Five decibels of extra output and eleven hertz of extra extension is what you are buying. In a room of any real size, both matter.

AMT rather than a dome

The Air Motion Transformer diaphragm is hand folded and coated with aluminium, held in a magnetic field, and it moves by squeezing air out of its folds. Because the moving mass is far lower than a dome tweeter's, it starts and stops faster, which is audible as detail in cymbals, string attack and sibilance that is present without being harsh.

It is also the reason EVE monitors are often described as revealing: a fast tweeter shows up a bad recording.

Active with DSP

The monitor is fully active, with the crossover, EQ and protection handled in DSP and PWM amplification driving the drivers. Total output is 100 W.

The cabinet is 175 mm wide, 275 mm high and 233 mm deep, weighing 5 kg. For a smaller desk the SC204 covers the same ground at 3.8 kg, and for midfield or main monitoring the SC4070 moves to a four way design with 1000 W.
