The Bowers & Wilkins Px8 is a flagship wireless over-ear headphone with bespoke 40 mm carbon cone drivers, Bluetooth 5.2 with aptX Adaptive, six microphone noise cancelling and up to 30 hours of battery life. It weighs 11.2 ounces.

Carbon cone drivers

The 40 mm drivers use a carbon cone, and the reason is stiffness. A driver diaphragm should move as a single piece; when it flexes, the flexing adds distortion that was not in the signal. Carbon is stiff for its weight, so the cone stays rigid at the excursions where a softer material would start to deform.

The drivers are angled within the earcup rather than mounted flat, which aligns them with the ear.

Codecs, and why aptX Adaptive matters

Bluetooth 5.2 with SBC, AAC, aptX Adaptive and aptX HD. aptX Adaptive varies its bitrate according to conditions, so it keeps a stable connection in crowded radio environments without permanently dropping to the lowest quality. With a compatible source the Px8 handles 24 bit high resolution audio.

On an Apple device playback falls back to AAC, which is normal rather than a fault.

Noise cancelling and battery

Noise cancelling uses six microphones with digital signal processing. Rated battery life is up to 30 hours, which is lower than some competitors quoting 50 or 60, and reflects the power the drivers and processing draw.

Two special editions of the Px8 are also listed: the 007 Edition and the McLaren Edition, which differ in finish and materials rather than in the audio specification.
