Audix OM3S Handheld Hypercardioid Dynamic Microphone

The Audix OM3S is the OM3 handheld hypercardioid dynamic microphone with an on/off switch on the body. Same VLM diaphragm, same 50 Hz to 18 kHz response, same greater than 144 dB SPL handling, with mute control in the presenter's hand.

The switch is the difference

Everything in the audio path matches the OM3. What the OM3S adds is a switch, which matters in three situations: a presenter who needs to cough, a worship or conference setting where several microphones share a channel count, and any rental stock where a microphone left live on a stand causes feedback.

If nobody should be able to switch the microphone off, order the plain OM3 instead. That decision is worth making deliberately, because a muted microphone that nobody can find is a common cause of a dead channel at front of house.

Pattern and voice

The hypercardioid pattern is tighter at the front than a cardioid and rejects the sides more firmly, so wedges and backline bleed less into the vocal. The VLM diaphragm keeps consonants and transients intact. Frequency response is 50 Hz to 18 kHz with a mild lift just above 100 Hz and a presence rise above 2 kHz.

Electrical and physical

Sensitivity is 2.5 mV/Pa at 1 kHz into 250 ohms output impedance, and the capsule handles more than 144 dB SPL without distortion. The body is 176 mm long and 53 mm at its widest, weighing 307 g. Audix designs, assembles and tests these microphones in the USA and warrants the VLM dynamic range for five years.
