Audix OM3 Handheld Hypercardioid Dynamic Microphone

The Audix OM3 is a handheld hypercardioid dynamic vocal microphone with a VLM diaphragm, running 50 Hz to 18 kHz at 2.5 mV/Pa into 250 ohms. The tight pattern is the reason to choose it: it isolates a voice from the rest of a loud stage.

Hypercardioid, and what that buys

A hypercardioid pattern is narrower at the front than a cardioid and rejects sound arriving from the sides more firmly, at the cost of a small rear lobe. On a stage with wedges and a drum kit two metres away, that narrower acceptance angle is what keeps the monitor out of the vocal channel and lets the engineer push gain further before feedback.

The VLM, or Very Low Mass, diaphragm is Audix's own design and is the reason the microphone tracks consonants and transients cleanly rather than smearing them.

Response and handling

Frequency response runs 50 Hz to 18 kHz, with a mild rise peaking just above 100 Hz and a presence lift above 2 kHz, which is the shape that lifts a voice out of a band mix without an EQ move. Sensitivity is 2.5 mV/Pa at 1 kHz and output impedance is 250 ohms, so it works into any standard preamp. The capsule handles very high SPL, in excess of 144 dB.

The microphone is 176 mm long, 53 mm at its widest, and weighs 307 g.

OM3 or OM3S

The OM3S is the same microphone with an on/off switch fitted. For a house microphone that should never be switched off by a guest, take the OM3. For a presenter or a worship setting where the user needs to mute at the microphone, take the OM3S.
