Audix MicroD Hypercardioid Condenser Instrument Microphone

The Audix MicroD is a miniature pre-polarised condenser on a flexible gooseneck, made to clip to a drum rim. It covers 40 Hz to 20 kHz, handles 140 dB SPL or more, and ships with the DVICEMICRO rim mount.

A condenser small enough to live on the rim

The capsule sits in an aluminium ring on a rubber shock mount system, on a flexible gooseneck, with the DVICEMICRO drum mount included. That combination is what lets a condenser sit on a tom rim through a set without picking up the shell resonance through the mount or moving out of position when the drummer hits hard.

The hypercardioid pattern is tight, which on a close drum kit means the tom microphone hears the tom rather than the hi-hat next to it.

Frequency response is 40 Hz to 20 kHz. Sensitivity is 5.6 mV/Pa at 1 kHz into 250 ohms output impedance. Equivalent noise level is 24 dB and signal to noise is 70 dB. Maximum SPL is 140 dB or greater, which is the figure that matters on a snare. Phantom power is 9 to 52 V, so it runs from anything, including a small mixer with reduced phantom voltage.
