Audix MB2450 MicroBoom

The Audix MB2450 is a MicroBoom system on a 24 inch carbon fibre boom, supplied with the M1250B cardioid condenser, clutch assembly, 25 ft shielded cable and windscreen. It is the short boom in the range, for close hanging positions and lecterns.

Why carbon fibre and why this length

The boom is carbon fibre, which is what allows a 24 inch arm to hold a microphone steady with almost no visible mass. In a hung choir position or over a lectern, a thin black boom reads as nothing on camera, which is usually the point.

The 24 inch length suits positions where the mounting point is already close to the source. If the microphone has to reach from a ceiling or a truss down toward a choir, the 50 inch MB5050 or the 84 inch MB8450 will get there instead.

The microphone on the end

The supplied M1250B is a miniaturised cardioid condenser with an integrated preamp and RF immunity, so nearby phones and GSM equipment do not put interference into the channel. Frequency response is 50 Hz to 19 kHz, sensitivity is 10 mV/Pa at 1 kHz into 150 ohms, maximum SPL is 140 dB or greater, equivalent noise level is 21 dBA, signal to noise is 73 dB and dynamic range is 119 dB.

The capsule body is machined brass with a black finish, 54 mm long and 16 g, on a 3 pin mini XLR male connector. Phantom power is 18 to 52 V.

Audix lists the MicroBoom range for choir, ensemble vocal, theatre and orchestral zone miking. Hypercardioid capsule options exist across the range if the room needs a tighter pattern than the cardioid M1250B.
