Audix FP7 - 7-Piece Fusion Drum Microphone Package

The Audix FP7 is a seven microphone Fusion Series drum package: one f6 for kick, one f5 for snare, three f2 for toms and two f9 condensers for cymbals and hi-hat, in an aluminium case.

What each microphone is tuned for

The f6 has extended bass response and is designed for kick drum, bass cabinets, cajon and other low frequency sources. The f5 is tuned for snare, and also works on bongos, timbales, guitar cabinets and acoustic instruments. The three f2 dynamics are made for rack and floor toms, and carry over to congas, djembe, bongos, timbales, brass and woodwind. The two f9 condensers are intended for cymbals and hi-hat.

Seven microphones covers a three tom kit with a proper overhead pair, which is the standard live layout.

Condensers on top

The f9 pair is the difference between the FP7 and the five microphone FP5. Condensers on cymbals capture the transient and the decay that a dynamic microphone rounds off, and in a room where the kit needs to be in the PA rather than just supported, that pair is what makes the whole kit sound like one instrument.

Case and range

The package ships in an aluminium carrying case for transport and protection. The Fusion Series sits below Audix's DP range, which uses the D6, i5, D2 and D4 dynamics with ADX51 or SCX1 condensers. Compare the FP7 against the DP7 if the kit is being recorded as well as reinforced.
