Audix f50 Handheld Cardioid Dynamic Microphone

The Audix F50 is a cardioid dynamic vocal microphone with an all metal body, running 50 Hz to 16 kHz and handling more than 138 dB SPL. It is Audix's entry level handheld, aimed at small to midsize PA systems and home studios.

Pattern and feedback behaviour

The cardioid pattern rejects sound from behind the microphone, which is where a floor wedge usually sits, and off axis rejection is better than 20 dB. That figure is the practical one for a small PA: it is how much gain the pattern buys you before the system rings.

Frequency response is 50 Hz to 16 kHz, tuned for warm and natural voice reproduction rather than a scooped or hyped curve.

Electrical figures

Sensitivity is 2.5 mV/Pa at 1 kHz and output impedance is 250 ohms, which is a standard low impedance output that any mixer preamp will take. Maximum SPL is greater than 138 dB, so a close vocal or a guitar cabinet will not overload the capsule.

Build and warranty

The body is all metal, which is the part that decides whether a microphone survives a rental cycle or a school hall. Audix covers the F50 with a three year warranty.

F50 or F50S

The F50S is the same microphone with a noiseless magnetic on/off switch. Magnetic switching is worth noting because it does not produce the click that a mechanical switch puts through the PA. Choose the F50 for fixed installs and house microphones, the F50S where the user needs to mute at hand.
