Audix A133 Large-Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The Audix A133 is a large diaphragm cardioid condenser with a 10 dB pad and a 150 Hz high pass filter on the body, built on the same 33 mm capsule and 3.4 micron gold sputtered diaphragm as the A131. The pad takes it to 150 dB SPL, which is what puts it in front of loud sources.

Measured performance

Sensitivity is 23 mV/Pa at 1 kHz into an output impedance of 150 ohms. Signal to noise is 84 dB, equivalent noise level is 10 dBA and dynamic range is 130 dB. Maximum SPL is 140 dB, or 150 dB with the pad engaged. The microphone runs on 48 V phantom, plus or minus 4 V, and weighs 280 g.

Frequency response is 40 Hz to 20 kHz, smooth from around 250 Hz to 16 kHz on Audix's published graph.

The two switches

The 10 dB pad drops the capsule output before the preamp, which is how the ceiling moves from 140 to 150 dB. Use it on a snare, a guitar cabinet or brass at close range.

The high pass filter rolls off from 150 Hz at 6 dB per octave. That is a gentle slope aimed at proximity build up and stage rumble rather than a drastic cut, so a close vocal loses the boom without losing the chest.

Body and mounting

The body is precision machined aluminium, 13.6 x 5.5 cm, with a proprietary internal shock mount and low noise preamp circuitry. The compact size is a practical advantage under a piano lid or as a drum overhead, where a full size condenser body and cradle get in the way.

Choosing between the A133 and the A131

The capsule, diaphragm, pattern and frequency response are identical. The A131 has neither switch. Buy the A133 when the microphone will meet high SPL sources or work close enough for proximity effect to matter, and the A131 when it will live on quieter sources at a distance.
