Audix A131 Large-Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser Microphone

The Audix A131 is a large diaphragm cardioid condenser built around a 33 mm capsule with a 3.4 micron gold sputtered diaphragm, in a machined aluminium body that measures only 13.6 x 5.5 cm. It is the plain version of Audix's studio condenser pair, with no pad and no filter in the signal path.

The capsule

The 33 mm fixed charge capsule carries a 3.4 micron gold sputtered diaphragm and a fixed cardioid pattern, so off axis sound and room reflections are rejected rather than coloured. Frequency response is 40 Hz to 20 kHz, and Audix's own response graph is smooth from roughly 250 Hz to 16 kHz, with a gentle roll off below 50 Hz and above 20 kHz. Maximum SPL is 140 dB.

A proprietary internal shock mount isolates the capsule inside the body, and the preamp circuitry is designed for low noise.

Why the small body matters

At 13.6 x 5.5 cm the A131 is far smaller than most large diaphragm condensers, which changes where it can go. Under a piano lid, inside a drum kit as an overhead, or in front of a guitar cabinet, a shorter body and a smaller shock mount take up less of the space you were trying to point it at.

What it is for

Audix lists vocals, choir, piano, acoustic instruments and drum overheads, in podcasting, audio production, studio recording and live stage work. The cardioid pattern and the 140 dB SPL ceiling are what make the stage use realistic rather than nominal.

A131 or A133

Same 33 mm capsule, same 3.4 micron diaphragm, same cardioid pattern and the same 40 Hz to 20 kHz response. The A133 adds two switches: a 10 dB pad, which lifts its ceiling from 140 dB to 150 dB, and a high pass filter rolling off from 150 Hz at 6 dB per octave. If the microphone will sit in front of loud sources or close to a source with proximity build up, the A133 gives you those two controls at the microphone. If it will not, the A131 is the same sound for less money.
