Arturia Microlab 25 Key Usb Midi Keyboard Controller

The Arturia MicroLab is a 25 key controller weighing 770 g, with capacitive touch strips instead of wheels and a USB cable that wraps into a channel in the body. It is built to be carried.

The cable channel

A recessed channel runs around the body and the supplied USB cable wraps into it. That sounds minor until you have packed a controller into a bag with a cable trailing from it. The MicroLab travels as one object, with nothing to find separately at the other end.

The unit is 414 x 130 x 37 mm and weighs 770 g.

Keys and controls

Twenty five velocity sensitive synth action mini keys, using the same keybed as Arturia's larger mini key controllers rather than a cheaper one. Two capacitive touch strips handle pitch bend and modulation, and four buttons cover the rest.

A hold button doubles as a sustain function for holding notes, and a chord function plays chords from single keys, which is useful when the keyboard is only 25 keys wide.

Power and compatibility

The MicroLab is USB powered and USB MIDI class compliant, needing no driver install. Power draw is low enough that it works with Android devices, iPads and iPhones through a camera connection kit without a powered hub in between, which is the practical test of whether a controller is genuinely portable.
