Arturia KeyStep Pro 37-key Midi Keyboard Controller

The Arturia KeyStep Pro is a 37-key sequencing controller with four independent step sequencer tracks, a 24 part drum sequencer, and four sets of CV, Gate and Mod outputs plus eight drum gates. It is built to run a rack of hardware without a computer in the room.

Four tracks, and what each can hold

The four track step sequencer gives 16 step buttons and up to 64 steps per sequence, with up to 16 notes of polyphony on every step. Three of the tracks are melodic and drive the CV outputs; the fourth is a 24 part drum sequencer that can run polyrhythms, so a hi-hat pattern in 7 can sit against a kick in 4 without either being truncated.

Sixteen project slots store groups of sequences, which is what makes the KeyStep Pro usable as a live instrument rather than a scratchpad.

Control voltage in quantity

Four sets of CV, Gate and Mod outputs drive up to four voices individually or in combination, and eight separate drum gate outputs trigger analog drum modules or a drum machine's individual inputs. A clock output synchronises pre-MIDI and DIN sync equipment, so older gear joins the same timeline.

On the MIDI side there is one input and two outputs, which matters when the rig has more than one MIDI destination and no merge box.

Playing it

The keybed is 37 slim keys with velocity and aftertouch. A dedicated pedal input handles sustain. There is a metronome with a built in speaker and a line output, so a click can be sent to a player without taking a channel from the mixer.

The unit is 589 x 55 x 209 mm and weighs 2.7 kg, and ships with an external power supply.

KeyStep Pro or KeyStep

The plain KeyStep is a single track 32-key sequencer with one set of CV outputs. The KeyStep Pro is four tracks plus drums, four CV sets, eight drum gates and project memory. If the rig has one synth, the KeyStep does the job. If it has four, only the Pro addresses them all at once.
