Arturia KeyStep Midi Keyboard

The Arturia KeyStep is a 32-note slim key controller with a 64-step polyphonic sequencer and an arpeggiator, plus CV, Gate and Mod outputs on 3.5 mm jacks. It is the compact way to play and sequence an analog synth from a desk.

Sequencer and arpeggiator

Each sequence holds up to 64 steps and each step can carry up to 8 notes, so chords sequence as easily as single lines. Eight sequence memories are available. The arpeggiator offers eight pattern styles, and swing and gate length are set from the keys rather than from a menu.

Chord mode sets a chord and then plays it back from a single key, and it works inside the arpeggiator too, which turns one finger into an arpeggiated chord progression.

Connecting to hardware

Pitch and modulation CV outputs, a Gate output and Sync in and out sit on 3.5 mm jacks, which is the connector most modular and semi-modular gear expects. MIDI in and out are on full size DIN sockets. USB is class compliant and bus powered, so it runs from a laptop or a tablet with no driver install and no power supply.

That combination means the KeyStep can sit between a modular rack, a MIDI synth and a computer at the same time, passing timing to all three.

The keybed

The 32 note Slimkey keyboard is velocity sensitive with aftertouch, and the pitch bend and modulation controls are capacitive touch strips rather than wheels, which is part of how the unit stays small enough to sit in front of a laptop.

Where it sits in the range

The KeyStep mk2 updates this design with a 16 mode arpeggiator, four assignable CV outputs, USB-C and 8 voice sequencer polyphony. The KeyStep Pro moves to 37 keys and four sequencer tracks with drum gates. This original KeyStep remains the compact single track option.
