Arturia keystep 37 MIDO Controller

The Arturia KeyStep 37 is a 37-note Slimkey controller and sequencer with 8 arpeggiator modes, a 64 step polyphonic sequencer holding 8 sequences, and CV, Gate and Mod outputs for analog gear.

Sequencing and arpeggios

Eight sequences can be recorded, each up to 64 steps, with 8 note polyphony per step. The arpeggiator has eight modes: Up, Down, Inclusive, Exclusive, Random, Walk, Pattern and Order, with a hold function so a pattern keeps running while both hands go elsewhere.

Chord generation is instant from a single key, which is the feature that makes this useful for writing rather than only for performing.

Hardware connections

The CV section provides pitch, gate and a modulation output, so an analog synth or a modular voice can be driven directly. MIDI is on 5 pin DIN, and there is analog clock in and out for synchronising drum machines that predate MIDI. USB carries MIDI to a computer.

The keyboard is 37 Slimkey notes with velocity and aftertouch. The unit measures 550 x 147 x 35 mm and weighs 1.6 kg.

Real time controls

Beyond the keys, the KeyStep 37 carries real time MIDI controls for shaping a part as it plays. Combined with the hold function and chord mode, the workflow is closer to playing an instrument than programming one.

Against the smaller and larger models

The 32 key KeyStep drops five keys and some of the real time control. The KeyStep Pro moves up to four sequencer tracks, a 24 part drum sequencer, four CV sets and eight drum gates. The KeyStep 37 sits between them, with more keys than the first and a simpler single track workflow than the second.
