Arturia Keystep mk2 32-Key MIDI Controller Keyboard and Sequencer

The Arturia KeyStep mk2 is the second generation 32-key Slimkey controller and sequencer: a 16 mode arpeggiator, an 8 voice polyphonic sequencer of up to 64 steps, four assignable CV outputs and USB-C. It weighs 1.1 kg.

What changed from the original KeyStep

Three things. The arpeggiator goes from 8 modes to 16, including Poly, Walk, Pattern and Random. The sequencer becomes 8 voice polyphonic across its 64 steps. And the CV section grows from pitch, gate and one modulation output to four assignable outputs: Pitch, Gate, Mod 1 and Mod 2, each assignable to velocity, aftertouch, the mod wheel and more.

USB also moves to USB-C, class compliant and bus powered, which matters if the rest of the desk has already moved to USB-C.

Playing and shaping

The 32-key Slimkey keybed is velocity sensitive with aftertouch, and two capacitive touch strips handle pitch bend and modulation. Chord mode and scale modes are included, so a chord can be triggered from one key and wrong notes can be locked out of a scale.

Full size MIDI In and Out are fitted, with MIDI Thru support, and Sync in and out are on 3.5 mm jacks for modular and older drum machines.

Size and software

The unit is 484 x 145 x 50 mm and weighs 1.1 kg, so it travels. Analog Lab Intro with more than 500 sounds and Ableton Live Lite are included, which is enough to make it a complete starting setup rather than a controller waiting for software.
