Arturia KeyLab MKII 61 Professional MIDI Controller

The Arturia KeyLab MkII 61 is the 61 key version of Arturia's aluminium bodied controller: 9 faders, 9 encoders, 16 RGB pads, five CV connections and a Pro-Feel keybed, at 875 mm wide and 7 kg.

Why the extra octave changes the instrument

Sixty one keys is five octaves, which is the point at which two hands can play a left hand part and a right hand part without shifting octave ranges mid-performance. On a 49 key controller that shift happens constantly. If the KeyLab is going to be played as an instrument rather than used mainly for programming, the 61 is the one.

The cost is desk space: 875 x 297 x 71 mm and 7 kg, against 793 mm and 6.3 kg for the 49.

The surface

Nine faders, nine rotary encoders and 16 RGB backlit pads, with six transport controls and ten DAW command buttons. Magnetic overlays label those buttons for Logic, Pro Tools, Studio One, Reaper, Ableton Live and Cubase.

The keybed is Arturia's Pro-Feel action, shared with the MatrixBrute and MiniBrute 2.

Modular connections

Five CV connections cover pitch, gate, mod 1, mod 2 and a CV input, so the controller both drives a modular rack and accepts control voltage back from it into the DAW. Five expression inputs and MIDI in and out complete the rear panel.

The software bundle includes Piano V, Analog Lab and Ableton Live Lite.
