Arturia KeyLab MKII 49 Professional MIDI Controller

The Arturia KeyLab MkII 49 is a 49 key controller in an aluminium chassis, with 9 faders, 9 encoders, 16 RGB pads and four CV/Gate outputs. It weighs 6.3 kg and is built to run a DAW and a modular rig from the same surface.

The keybed

Both sizes of KeyLab MkII use Arturia's Pro-Feel action, the same keybed fitted to the MatrixBrute and MiniBrute 2. That is a semi weighted synth action rather than a piano action, which is the right choice for a 49 key instrument: it suits synth parts, organ and clavinet playing, and it keeps the weight down to 6.3 kg.

Control surface

Nine large faders and nine rotary encoders sit above 16 RGB backlit performance pads. Six transport controls and ten DAW command buttons handle the sequencer, and magnetic labelling overlays are supplied for Logic, Pro Tools, Studio One, Reaper, Ableton Live and Cubase, so the buttons are labelled for whichever DAW is actually in use rather than generically.

Reaching analog gear

Five CV connections are fitted: pitch, gate, mod 1, mod 2 and a CV input. The input is the interesting one, because it lets a modular synth's own CV output control something inside the DAW, rather than only the other way round. Five expression control inputs are also provided.

MIDI in and out are on DIN. The unit measures 793 x 297 x 71 mm.

49 or 61

The KeyLab MkII 61 is the same controller with twelve more keys, at 875 x 297 x 71 mm and 7 kg. Every control, output and software item matches. Decide on playing range and desk width alone: the 49 fits a standard studio desk, the 61 usually does not. For a hammer action piano feel, the KeyLab 88 MkII uses a Fatar TP100LR keybed instead.
