Arturia KeyLab Essential 61 MK3 MIDI Controller Keyboard

The Arturia KeyLab Essential 61 mk3 is a 61 key controller at 3.08 kg, with nine encoders, nine sliders, eight pads and a clickable browsing encoder. Five octaves of range for the weight of a small synth.

Five octaves without the mass

Sixty one keys at 3.08 kg is the headline. The aluminium bodied KeyLab MkII 61 gives the same range at 7 kg, so the Essential is less than half the weight for a player who moves the controller between rooms or takes it to a session.

The keyboard is velocity sensitive with a hybrid synth and piano feel, and the unit measures 890 x 240 x 70 mm.

Controls

Nine encoders plus a clickable browsing encoder, nine sliders, and eight touch and pressure sensitive pads. Six transport switches and four command switches drive the DAW, with pitch bend and modulation wheels for playing.

The mk3 display shows customisable parameters and operating modes in more detail than the previous generation, which is what makes the encoder assignments readable while working.

Bundled software

Analog Lab Pro V.5, Ableton Live Lite, Melodics, UVI Model D and a Native Instruments licence are included, with Loopcloud access. Analog Lab Pro is the significant one: it is the full preset player for Arturia's instrument collection, and the controller maps to it without configuration.

The KeyLab Essential 49 mk3 is identical in controls and software at 790 mm and 2.76 kg. Choose by playing range and by whether 890 mm fits the desk.
