Arturia KeyLab Essential 49 MK3 MIDI Controller Keyboard

The Arturia KeyLab Essential 49 mk3 is a 49 key controller weighing 2.76 kg, with nine encoders, nine sliders, eight pads and a clickable browsing encoder. It is the light end of the KeyLab range.

What you get on the surface

A clickable encoder for browsing sits beside nine further encoders and nine sliders, giving a fader per channel for a small mix. Eight touch and pressure sensitive pads cover drums and samples. Six transport switches and four command switches handle the DAW, and pitch bend and modulation wheels are fitted rather than strips.

The mk3 generation updated the display, which now shows more of the customisable parameters and operating modes than the previous version did.

Keybed and weight

The 49 note keyboard is velocity sensitive with a hybrid synth and piano feel. At 790 x 240 x 70 mm and 2.76 kg, the Essential is less than half the weight of the aluminium bodied KeyLab MkII 49, which is the trade being made: plastic chassis and a simpler keybed in exchange for something one hand can move.

Software included

Analog Lab Pro V.5, Ableton Live Lite, Melodics, UVI Model D and a Native Instruments licence are supplied, along with Loopcloud access. For a first controller that bundle is most of a working studio.

49 or 61

The KeyLab Essential 61 mk3 is the same controller at 890 mm wide and 3.08 kg. Every control matches; only the playing range and the desk footprint change.
