The Arturia KeyLab 88 MkII is an 88 note hammer action controller on a Fatar TP100LR keybed with aftertouch, in a metal frame with wooden side panels, weighing 14.7 kg.

A piano keybed, not a synth keybed

The TP100LR is a hammer action, piano weighted keybed with real moving mechanical parts and aftertouch. That is what separates the 88 MkII from the 49 and 61 models, which use Arturia's semi weighted Pro-Feel action. If the player is a pianist, this is the only KeyLab that will feel correct under the hands.

The frame is metal with real wood side panels, and the whole instrument is 1293 x 322 x 112 mm at 14.7 kg.

Control surface

Nine encoders, nine faders, 16 DAW user controls and a central Big Knob sit on the master control panel, with 16 RGB velocity and pressure sensitive pads for drum programming and sample triggering.

Connections

CV and gate connectivity is fitted for modular and vintage synths, along with a CV input for external analog controllers. Three auxiliary pedal inputs cover expression and sustain, and MIDI and USB handle the digital side.

The pedal count matters on an 88: a piano player expects sustain, and the extra inputs allow a soft pedal or an expression pedal without choosing between them.

Software

Analog Lab is included along with full versions of Piano V, Wurli V and Vox Continental V, plus Ableton Live Lite. Those three full instruments are exactly what an 88 key controller gets bought to play.
