Arturia BeatStep USB/MIDI/CV Controller

The Arturia BeatStep is a 16 pad controller and step sequencer with 16 assignable encoders, sending MIDI over USB and CV and Gate to analog gear. It is the small box that sits between a laptop, a synth and a modular voice.

Pads and encoders

Sixteen backlit pads are velocity and pressure sensitive, and sixteen assignable encoders operate in two modes, MIDI CC and NRPN or RPN. NRPN support is worth noting: it is what lets the BeatStep address parameters on synths whose deeper controls are not exposed as plain CCs.

The pads send note data, MIDI CC and Program Change with Bank Select, so the unit works as a program change controller for a live rig as well as a drum pad.

Analog and digital outputs together

A standard 1 volt per octave CV output and a Gate output drive analog synths and modular voices. MIDI output handles everything with a DIN socket. USB is class compliant, so it works with a laptop or an iPad without drivers.

The BeatStep sends MIDI clock with start and stop as internal sync, and can send MMC play and stop messages, which lets it act as the transport master for a small setup.

Configuration

The MIDI Control Center software is included and handles assignment of every pad and encoder, so a layout can be built for a specific instrument once and stored. For a larger sequencing setup, the BeatStep Pro adds two melodic sequencer tracks, a 16 track drum sequencer and eight drum gate outputs.
