Yamaha WXC-50 MusicCast Wireless Streaming Device

The Yamaha WXC-50 is a MusicCast streaming preamplifier with the same ESS converter used in Yamaha's high-end AV receivers, handling FLAC, WAV and AIFF to 24 bit and 192 kHz and DSD to 5.6 MHz, with distortion of 0.003 percent. It is 2 inches tall.

What it is for

The WXC-50 adds streaming to a system that already has an amplifier and speakers. Rather than replacing a good stereo amplifier to get network audio, this sits in front of it and provides the sources: Wi-Fi, AirPlay, Bluetooth, DLNA and MusicCast multi-room.

It is a preamplifier, so it has a volume control and line outputs but no power amplifier. The existing amplifier does the driving.

File support and conversion

FLAC, WAV and AIFF play up to 24 bit and 192 kHz, Apple Lossless up to 24 bit and 96 kHz, and DSD up to 5.6 MHz. The converter is the same high performance ESS part Yamaha fits in its high-end AV receivers, and total harmonic distortion measured 20 Hz to 20 kHz at the preamp output is 0.003 percent.

Connections

Optical and stereo RCA inputs handle wired sources, and a USB input plays files from a drive. Outputs are digital coaxial and stereo RCA, so the WXC-50 can feed either a digital input on an existing amplifier or an analog one.

That dual output is worth noting: if the amplifier has its own converter you may prefer to send it the digital signal and skip the WXC-50's conversion entirely.

Size and power draw

The unit is 2 inches tall and 8-3/8 inches wide, and can stand horizontally or vertically. With the feet removed it is 1-5/8 inches high, which fits a 1U rack shelf. Power consumption is about 5 W in use and under 2 W in standby.
