Solid State Logic Fusion Analog Stereo Outboard Processor

The SSL Fusion is a 2U stereo analog outboard processor with five colouring stages: Vintage Drive, Violet EQ, HF Compressor, Stereo Image and a switched SSL Transformer circuit.

Five stages, each doing one job

Vintage Drive is a non-linear harmonic enhancement circuit with Drive and Density controls, used to add cohesion and weight. Violet EQ is a minimum phase-shift two-band shelving equaliser with four switched frequency points per band and plus or minus 9 dB of range.

The HF Compressor produces high frequency rounding in the analog domain, which is the traditional way of taming harshness without a de-esser. Stereo Image is a true analog mid-side circuit that manipulates the side signal, so width is adjusted rather than simulated. The Transformer stage is a switched custom SSL transformer adding low frequency saturation and a high frequency phase shift.

Why it is on the mix bus

Each stage is subtle on its own. Used together across a stereo mix they do what analog console summing used to do for free: soften transients slightly, add harmonic density, and widen the image without a plugin's artefacts.

That is why Fusion is normally patched across the mix bus or across a stem group rather than on a single channel.

Connections and controls

Input, output and insert are all on XLR, and the insert is switchable between a stereo insert and the mid-side circuit, so outboard can be placed on the side signal alone. Input and output trim provide plus or minus 12 dB, with an input overload LED and peak-hold metering.

A third order high pass filter with three selectable cutoff frequencies is fitted. The unit is a 2U stereo outboard processor.
