The ring driver

Rather than a conventional dome, the HD 800 S uses a ring shaped diaphragm with the drive applied around the circumference. Removing the centre of the diaphragm removes the mode that causes break-up in a large driver, which is what allows a driver this size to stay clean. The measured result is 0.02 percent distortion at 1 kHz and 1 Vrms.

Quoted frequency response runs from 4 Hz to 51,000 Hz, wider than anything else in the Sennheiser open range.

What it demands

Impedance is 300 ohms, so a proper amplifier is required. The HD 800 S is also revealing enough that it exposes the source ahead of it, which means a poor recording or a noisy converter is audible as such rather than smoothed over. That is the intended behaviour for a reference headphone and it is worth understanding before buying.

The Sennheiser HDV 820 is the matching amplifier, with XLR3, XLR4, 6.3 mm and 4.4 mm balanced outputs, distortion below 0.001 percent and over 115 dB dynamic range into 600 ohms.

Fit and use
