RME Fireface UFX II – The USB Flagship Audio Interface

The RME Fireface UFX II is a 60-channel USB 2.0 interface in one rack unit, 30 inputs and 30 outputs, with four 75 dB microphone preamps and standalone recording to a USB drive. It is the desk interface for a studio that tracks bands rather than one voice at a time.

Twelve analog channels, thirty on the bus

Twelve analog inputs and outputs sit on the panel, four of them XLR/TRS combo sockets that take a microphone, an instrument or a line source. Two headphone outputs run independent mixes. Digital expansion comes from 2 x ADAT I/O, which is 16 more channels at 48 kHz and 8 at 96 kHz with S/MUX, plus 1 x AES/EBU I/O and an optical SPDIF on the second ADAT port. Word clock and two MIDI I/O ports complete the rear panel.

Converter and preamp figures

Inputs 9 to 12 are the preamps: 75 dB of gain, +18 dBu maximum at 0 dB gain, and -129.8 dBu equivalent input noise at 60 dB gain into 150 ohms, A weighted. The AD stage measures 116 dB signal to noise to AES17 and 118 dBA at Lo Gain, with THD+N below -110 dB at -1 dBFS. The DA stage gives 115 dB RMS unweighted, 118 dBA, THD+N below -104 dB.

Sample rates run from 28 kHz to 200 kHz.

DURec and standalone use

DURec records inputs and outputs directly to a USB drive with no computer attached, which is what makes the UFX II usable as a location recorder or a rehearsal room capture box. The unit also works with the ARC USB remote for hands-on level and monitoring control, and runs in Class Compliant mode for iPad connection. Outputs are DC coupled for CV and gate use.

Mixing and monitoring

TotalMix FX handles routing and monitor mixes on the interface itself, with EQ, dynamics, reverb and delay, so a headphone mix does not cost the host CPU anything and survives a DAW stall.

Where it sits against the UFX III

Same preamps, same DURec, same TotalMix FX. The UFX II stops at 60 channels over USB 2.0 and has no MADI. The UFX III moves to USB 3.0 and adds 64 MADI channels for a total of 188. Choose by whether anything in the room speaks MADI.
