The Neumann TLM193 is a fixed cardioid large diaphragm condenser covering 20 Hz to 20 kHz at 18 mV/Pa, with 10 dB-A self noise and a maximum SPL of 140 dB at 0.5 percent THD, 49 mm across and 175 mm long, weighing about 480 g.
A single pattern, and a high ceiling
Cardioid only, with no pad and no filter switches. What the TLM193 does have is a 140 dB maximum SPL at 0.5 percent THD without needing a pad at all, which is a higher ceiling than the U 87 Ai reaches even with its pad engaged.
Self noise is 10 dB-A, low enough for quiet acoustic sources, and sensitivity is 18 mV/Pa, or -32.5 dBV, plus or minus 1 dB.
Frequency response
Response runs 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The TLM193 is voiced without a strong presence lift, which is the reason it is often described as neutral rather than flattering. On a source that already has plenty of top end, that neutrality is what keeps the recording usable.
The body is 49 mm in diameter and 175 mm long, weighing about 480 g.
Against the TLM103
Both are fixed cardioid transformerless designs at a similar size. The TLM103 has lower self noise at 7 dB-A and higher sensitivity at 23 mV/Pa, with a slightly lower 138 dB ceiling. The TLM193 is the more neutral voicing of the two.
For multiple patterns instead, the TLM107 offers five with a 153 dB ceiling using its pad.
