Neumann MT48 USB C Audio Interface

The Neumann MT48 is a USB-C audio interface with 136 dB dynamic range converters, two mic and line preamps with up to 78 dB of gain, four monitor and line outputs, two headphone outputs and a touchscreen. It records at 24 bit and 192 kHz.

136 dB of dynamic range

That converter figure is the reason this interface exists at its price. Dynamic range of 136 dB means the noise floor sits far enough below the loudest signal that gain staging stops being a compromise: a quiet source can be recorded without pushing the preamp into its own noise, and a loud one without approaching the ceiling.

Preamp gain reaches 78 dB, which is enough for a ribbon or a low output dynamic microphone with no inline booster.

Inputs, outputs and expansion

The first two channels take microphone or line level on XLR and TRS combo sockets. Two further channels take line or instrument level on 1/4 inch TRS. Four monitor and line outputs and two headphone outputs handle the return side.

Expansion runs over ADAT and S/PDIF, and the interface also speaks AES67, with MIDI integrated. Conversion is 24 bit at up to 192 kHz.

Processing on the interface

A fully parametric 4-band EQ and a 3-way dynamics processor are available per channel, along with a reverb. Because that processing runs on the interface, a monitor mix with EQ and compression on the vocal can be built for the performer without the host computer being in the path.

The touchscreen sets all of it on the unit itself, so a session can be adjusted without switching windows on the computer.
