Arturia Astrolab Avant-Garde Stage Keyboard

The Arturia AstroLab is a 61 note semi-weighted stage keyboard with Arturia's synthesis engines built in, so the sounds run on the instrument rather than on a laptop. It weighs 9.9 kg and carries over 1800 presets.

Ten engines in the instrument

AstroLab holds ten sound engines: virtual analog, samples, wavetable, FM, granular, physical modelling, vector synthesis, harmonic, phase distortion and vocoder. Across them sit 40 instruments and more than 1600 presets, with over 1800 sounds in total available from the library.

The point of putting them in hardware is that a stage keyboard with no computer has nothing to crash, nothing to update mid-tour and no audio interface to fail. Seventeen onboard effects finish the signal path.

Connections for a stage

MIDI in, a balanced stereo input, and sustain, expression and two auxiliary pedal inputs are fitted. USB-C connects to a computer and a USB-A host port takes storage or a controller. Bluetooth audio input and WiFi are included for wireless control and for playing backing material into the instrument.

The balanced stereo input matters live: a second source can be mixed at the keyboard and sent to front of house on the same pair of cables.

The keybed and the body

Sixty one full size semi-weighted keys with aftertouch, plus pitch bend and modulation wheels. The instrument is 935 x 330 x 99 mm and weighs 9.9 kg, which is a weight one person carries.

AstroLab is the hardware end of Arturia's software range, so a sound built in Analog Lab on a computer moves to the instrument for the gig.
