The M-Audio Oxygen Pro Mini is a 32-mini-key controller with eight pads, four knobs and four faders, measuring roughly 40 by 19 cm and weighing a little over a kilogram.

What is kept and what is dropped

Compared with the larger Oxygen Pro models, this one has 32 mini keys instead of full size keys, and no aftertouch. Eight pads rather than 16, four knobs rather than eight, four faders rather than nine.

What survives the shrink is the part that matters for writing: Smart Chord, Smart Scale and the arpeggiator are all present, along with pitch and modulation wheels and a 1/4 inch sustain socket. So the assistance features that make a small keyboard workable are intact.

Portability

At about 40 x 19 cm and just over 1 kg, the Oxygen Pro Mini fits in a backpack alongside a laptop. Thirty two keys is more range than the usual 25 key mini controller, which is worth about three extra notes at each end when playing a part rather than programming it.

Who it suits

This is the model for writing away from the studio and for a desk that has no room for a 49 key instrument. If aftertouch or a full mixer strip of faders is needed, the Oxygen Pro 25 adds aftertouch and 16 pads, and the Oxygen Pro 49 adds nine faders and full size keys.
